Levante beach, Benidorm, July 2021

AS beach services resume for the summer, figures out this week show that the much-missed foreign tourists are heading back to the region, but numbers still haven’t quite reached pre-pandemic levels.

But according to figures published by the INE (National Statistics Institute), the numbers are not far off, just 5% below the number of foreign tourists that arrived in 2019.

The region received 783,987 international tourists in April, ten times the figure two years ago, and they spent 797 million Euros.

Between January and April of this year, there were 1,949,279 international visitors to the region, an increase of 891.7% on the year before, according to surveys carried out among international tourists and published on Wednesday this week.

The figures show that in April the recovery of the British tourist industry began in earnest, with 1.2 million UK tourists arriving in Spain. In the Valencian Region, UK visitors made up 26.7% of the international market in April, while French tourists accounted for 15.8%. The average spend per trip by foreign tourists to the Comunidad Valenciana in April was 1,017 euros with a daily average spend of 117 euros.
