DOMESTIC violence claimed its latest victim in Spain yesterday. And it wasn’t in a deprived, underprivileged district, this time it was in the heart of Valencia’s wealthy centre.
The 30-year-old woman, who was found stabbed to death in an apartment in Calle Conde Altea, will become the 38th victim in the country so far this year and the fourth in the region if police confirm it as a case of domestic abuse. A 35-year-old man, who is understood to have been previously involved with the victim, has been detained by police.
The crime comes just 10 days after the city saw demonstrations against domestic violence on 25 November, and the woman will be the 1,119th victim since 2003.
There have been outpourings of grief and support on social media for the victim’s family as well as her friends in the falla where she was a member. But no words will be enough for the parents who have lost their daughter or perhaps siblings who have lost a sister. At 30 she had her whole life ahead of her and that has now been cut short, while her family are now condemned to suffer her loss for the rest of their lives.

If you or anyone you know is suffering from domestic abuse, help is available.
