Backtracking on relaxing facemask use in schools

PLANS to relax facemask rules in school playgrounds may have to be shelved following a spike in coronavirus infections.

On Monday the health and education departments were discissing the use of facemasks in schools with an eye stopping them being compulsory in outdoor situations, like playgrounds. The plans had been welcomed by many in the education community. One teacher told me that she was a bit tired of constantly telling students to put their facemasks on properly, expecially when outside.

However, last weekend there were 509 new cases of coronavirus, almost double the previous weekend when there were 290 new infections, leadinng the health departmemt to back track on their plans to relax facemask wearing at schools.

There were also 2 deaths within the past seven days and 176 people in the region’s hospitals suffering from coronavirus, slightly up on the previous week’s 149.
