TO celebrate World Car-Free day, public transport services run by the Valencia government have been free today. The machines for validating tickets have been ‘out of service’ for the duration of the day.
Access was free to Metrovalencia, TRAM d’Alacant, TRAM de Castelló and Metrobus (Valencia’s city buses).
Councillor for territorial Policy, Public Works and Mobility, Arcadi España, explained that “this initiative, as in previous years, is part of the different activities programmed by the Generalitat as part of the celebration of European Mobility Week from 16 to 22 September.”
“The objective is to promote more sustainable habits in society as a whole and to remind people that public transport is a totally safe means of transport,” he stressed.
As part of the initiatives of European Mobility Week, the government has also started the ‘Mou-te amb Impacte Zero‘ (Move with zero impact) and the ‘Hui Descansa el Cotxe‘ (Let the car rest today) campaigns.
Arcadi Spain explained that “the objective of all public administrations must be to converge towards zero impact to advance in cultural change that consolidates mobility and more sustainable cities and in achieving spaces with less noise and pollution and better quality of life”.
